Freelance Item Writer Opportunities

Cognia is hiring freelance item writers to support current and future content development for assessment projects.

Freelance item writers find that serving in this role expands expertise in assessment, leading to expanded opportunities. As a freelance item writer, you will collaborate with content and assessment professionals and see your work influence student achievement around the world.

This position involves locating, developing, reviewing, and reconciling new and existing content (stimulus materials and test items) for ELA, math, science, or social studies projects. All work will be done remotely and according to specific project procedures and processes. It is essential that applicants have access to a stable, secure, and private internet service.

Guidelines and expectations for assigned work:
  • Complete assigned work in a timely manner following the provided schedule and timelines for handoffs
  • Complete assigned work according to provided project parameters, academic standards, and content constraints
  • Maintain frequent and effective communication with the content lead/manager, addressing issues early before they impact deliverables
Competencies:
  • Ability to collaborate with Cognia staff and Cognia departments to ensure quality passage/stimulus and item content
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe Professional, and other software and web-based applications (e.g., Zoom)
Essential requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or Doctorate in respective content area/s or discipline (or in curriculum, measurement, or other applicable area)
  • Familiarity with national and/or state curriculum standards including the Common Core State Standards (for math and ELA), the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and College, Career, and Civil Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards
  • Prior item writing/assessment experience
  • Prior passage writing experience for ELA (personal, professional, other)
  • Prior passage finding experience for ELA
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Successful use and application of internal Cognia development programs
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and make things happen in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Independent worker (self-starter, time management, plan & execute tasks w/minimal supervision)
  • Understanding of Universal Design principles
Preferred:
  • Two or more years of teaching experience at the elementary, middle, or secondary level (single or multiple content areas or disciplines)
  • Assessment project experience (formative, benchmark, interim, summative)
Additional value to Cognia:
  • Specialized content experience (ELL, SPED, ECE, ALT ED)
  • Understanding of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility
  • Test construction experience
